Adaptogens: What They Are And Why You Need Them

I have loved adaptogens for a long time, after all, they help our bodies adapt (get it?) to life and it’s stressors. With so many different adaptogens it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you, so I have decided to break it down with my top 10 favorites and what each one is good for. This way, you can change it up based on what your body needs. I kept it short and sweet, so you can watch the full video on it here if you want a more in depth look at them.

As a bit of background, adaptogens have been used for thousands of years to promote health and wellbeing. They are pretty much superstars that help your body in many different ways from balancing hormones, to boosting immunity and enhancing mood. Plus, they are a game changer because they have the ability to bring you up when you are lethargic or down or they bring you down when your anxious or wired. Pretty cool eh?

Ashwagandha

This one is great for anxiety, depression, and sleep. It also boosts your immune system and decreases cortisol. I like adding it to smoothies or bulletproof coffee.

Astralagus

I use this for increasing the amount of anti-stress compounds in the body. Plus it decreases the ability of cortisol to bind to receptors, meaning less stress. This one I typically use capsules!

Cordyceps

This one is a mushroom and is one of my favorites for adrenal fatigue. It does this by increasing ATP which is the source of energy for our bodies cells. It also helps to fight free radicals, making it a great antioxidant. I typically use mine in coffee, it has a great earthy flavor.

Holy Basil (Tulsi)

Great at regulating blood pressure and blood sugar, while helping to keep your body young because of its anti-aging properties. It also decreases the stress hormones that are pumped through our bodies during times of stress. You can take it as a tea, I like this one, which is great for an everyday effect. Or, you can take it as a tincture if you feel like you need more of a boost.

Rhodiola

This is a more stimulating adaptogen, I like it when my adrenals feel shot and I need a big boost. It has the phytochemical salidroside which is great for resisting both anxiety and aging. In particular, it is great for increasing your resistance to mental and physical stress. I like taking it as capsules or as a tincture.

Maca

This one is particularly good for stabilizing energy, making it a great addition to your morning coffee so you get that steady energy release. If you are worried about the taste, it was a wonderfully nutty almost caramel type flavor. I also sneak some into pancakes, you can find the recipe here. Maca is great for boosting libido and mood, so if stress if effecting those areas this is a great option.

Ginseng

This one is great for boosting overall energy and concentration. I typically load up on this when I am studying or using extra brain power. I like using this one in liquid form as a tincture or if I am out at a smoothie shop and they have it available I will add it in.

Licorice Root

Great for boosting energy and endurance. It is also especially good at boosting the immune system, so if you are worn down and feel like you’re getting sick, reach for this.

He Shou Wu

This is a Chinese herb that is great for longevity. It helps to build blood as well as slowing down the bodies aging to keep your body optimal.

Pearl

Loaded with enzymes and amino acids pearl is full of essential minerals. It is also a great antioxidant that boosts the efficacy of superoxide dismutase, a strong enzyme in the body that is great for stress.
